ALONGSIDE THE BROKENHEARTED
Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. King David
Trauma happens everywhere – trauma care not yet
Providing Access
In many countries, the number of trauma psychologists is disproportionate to the number of traumatized people. In addition to that, not many people can afford long, expensive therapy sessions. BRACE's goal is to remove this inequality.
A Network
BRACE is not an organization that provides its own trauma care – we are a network of independent practitioners that team up, whenever the opportunity arises to help local initiatives in new places start their own trauma care.
Our Members
BRACE members have witnessed the life-changing impact of trauma healing in their own communities.
Together with other members of our network, we train, coach, and support new communities so they can build local trauma care services.
Locally Focused
Where trauma care doesn't yet exist, we work together to establish it. BRACE does not establish its own organization in new locations; instead, we train and coach local organizations in building their own trauma care services.
Ongoing Coaching
Our trainers maintain regular contact with the newly trained organizations to provide them with support and guidance, especially in the beginning.
Our members also maintain contact with each other, learning from one another and providing mutual training.
How it all began
Fadumo (name changed) was at the market in Mogadishu, Somalia, with her youngest child on her back when a rocket struck her home, wiping out her entire family in an instant. We met her years later in a refugee camp in the desert. Her trauma kept her from sleeping; the constant wind flapping the plastic tarps of her tent gave her headaches – she longed for peace and quiet. The aid organizations in the camp were struggling to provide shelter and food for all the refugees; trauma care was out of the question.
Meeting her set the course for our work: BRACE is dedicated to ensuring that people with trauma, like Fadumo, receive help.
What began tentatively in Ethiopia has grown into a nationwide effort. BRACE is now helping to establish trauma care services in a growing number of countries, including Rwanda, Burundi, Sri Lanka, and Switzerland.
To be continued…
Testimonies
I thought you would come and heal us from our trauma, and now you have shown us how to help ourselves and our nation

Testimonies
For the first time since the assault three years ago, I was able to sleep again. I had thought of ending my life and now I have new hope.
